Monday Roundup: Dunbar holds C-G to 2 hits, fans 16 to propel Lions to rebounding 3-0 blank; Fri/Scio’s Ross tosses no-no in 3-0 home shutout over Southwick-Powers, GV/Belfast

WELLSVILLE — This past weekend was one that the Lions of Wellsville hoped to leave behind in the rearview mirror. They were provided with an opportunity to do just that with a visit from Canisteo-Greenwood on Monday back inside the Lion’s Den.

All of the game’s scoring would come in the first three innings of play, as both the Redskins and Lions gave it everything they had across an all-out defensive battle. As for what it would take to try and break the floodgates open, it would take an even balance of power.

With the offense already beginning to kick the tires into gear on one side, Logan Dunbar would help take it to another level.

With his best game of the season.

The Wellsville senior was unstoppable during his time on the rubber, as he went all seven innings holding Canisteo-Greenwood at an absolute standstill, handing out 16 chairs while holding them to just two hits. The momentum would continue after the Lions struck first with all three of their runs coming in the first three innings of play, holding the lead for good to secure a rebounding 3-0 shutout win.

“The last two games were tough pills to swallow for us. Logan really needed this game tonight, and he needed to get back on the horse to prove he’s a better pitcher than this past weekend. He did just that,” said Lions coach Tom Delahunt. “He found his rhythm, he located his pitches, he was really efficient. It allowed him to get back to where he was a week ago. It’s a great rebound game, and we had a lot of fast innings. It’s nice to play defense behind a pitcher that is working quickly and throwing a ton of strikes.”

The Lions (5-4) were able to scavenge four hits to fuel their offense, which generated the game’s first run in their first at-bats. The lead was held across a scoreless second inning before they were able to add on with their last two runs coming in the third. Pacing the offense were both Cody Costello and Ty Vogel, each recording a triple, with Costello leading the game off with his to the deep portion of the outfield, accounting the opening run himself along the way.

Dunbar carried a no-hit bid all the way into the seventh during Canisteo-Greenwood’s final tenure of offense, where they were able to break it up with a single each from Korbyn Osterwald and Noah Warriner. But before the Redskins could apply any pressure, Dunbar was able to record a humongous and successful game-ending pick-off of Warriner at first base to end the game, securing Wellsville’s shutout win in style.

Warriner would go on to strikeout three and walk two during his start that stretched into the fourth inning for Canisteo-Greenwood.

Wellsville is back on the diamond Wednesday night back over the road for the next pair, beginning in the Maple City in a 5 p.m. first pitch against the Hornell Red Raiders.

Bolivar-Richburg 13, Hinsdale 1 (F-5)

BOLIVAR — The start of the week for the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg was an explosive one. On Monday, the offense collected at least two runs in each of the four innings of action they partook, while the defense fronted by Reiss Gaines and Aydin Sisson on the mound converged to hold visiting Hinsdale hit-less, as they strolled their way towards victory by a 13-1 count after five innings.

The Wolverines (6-3) went on to post a fast start against the Bobcats right in the opening frame of play, automatically setting a tone that allowed them to take the game’s first and only lead, holding it to their advantage over the course of time with runs being scored across every inning of action.

After a four-run bottom of the third, Bolivar-Richburg closed up the night with a five-run frame that provided an exclamation point on the victory.

Reiss Gaines and Aydin Sisson were outstanding on the mound for the hosts in red and black, as the two combined to hold their opposition in check from start to finish, recording a no-hit performance with Gaines docking the win with six strikeouts and three walks. In relief, Sisson fanned four more Hinsdale batters and walked one to further the cause.

On offense, the Wolverines saw Ian Unfus take charge with a hit and two RBI. Evan Pinney and Trey Buchholz each recorded a hit and RBI of their own, while Caden Allen, Landon Barkley and Cayden Gaines each had a hit. For Hinsdale (1-5), Xander Pascucci tallied the team’s lone run in the top of the third off a fielder’s choice. He would also provide a strikeout and walk in relief on the mound.

Both teams are back in action tonight in a pair of 5 p.m. first pitches, as Bolivar-Richburg welcomes in Genesee Valley/Belfast, while Hinsdale hits the road once more to Friendship to take on Friendship/Scio.

SCIO — While Ryan Daciw was delivering a phenomenal start for Genesee Valley/Belfast on the mound, the offense followed up with a big performance of their own on Monday over the road.

Holding a 7-1 lead over host Friendship/Scio in the first three innings of play, the game was branched out insurmountably by the visitors in black and gray, as they posted a fourth inning that saw them break away to force an early end to the battle, capturing the 17-5 victory after five complete innings.

Genesee Valley/Belfast (3-5) struck while the iron was hot in their first pair of tenures at the plate, finding their rhythm quickly with the game’s first seven runs in two innings of play, including a three-run opening frame. Friendship/Scio would go on to break the shutout in the bottom of the third with their first run before the visitors assumed control once again.

In the top of the fourth, the damage would soon be done, as Genesee Valley/Belfast struck all chords with a seven-run frame to pull away and out of reach of the hosts in gold and black. The team would collect 17 runs off eight hits, with Daciw leading both sides with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate, scoring a run. On the mound, Daciw recorded the win with seven strikeouts and one walk across three innings of work.

For Friendship/Scio (2-5), Nick Sortore struck out five and walked six in his three-inning start on the rubber. He also went 2-for-3 to lead the offense, driving in a run.

Both teams are back after it tonight in a pair of 5 p.m. first pitches, as Genesee Valley/Belfast continues their road trip with a visit to Bolivar-Richburg, while Friendship/Scio heads back over the hill to Friendship to take on Hinsdale.

Fillmore 21, Andover/Whitesville 9 (F-6)

FILLMORE — After a strong start out of the gate by Andover/Whitesville, host Fillmore would have to fight their way back from behind in an early deficit on Monday.

The Eagles would regain traction by grabbing the lead after the first three innings, but it would become a back-and-forth battle down the stretch until the big finish in the bottom of the sixth. A frame where the bats caused a massive inferno at the plate after scoring the night’s last 10 runs to force the end of the battle with a 21-9 home win — their fifth in the first six games.

The scoring began right in Andover/Whitesville’s first outing at the plate, as they broke the ice against Fillmore with a four-run frame headlined by a pair of two-run singles posted by both Jacob Wagner and Brody Carlin, gaining their upper hand to work with.

In turn, the hosts in green responded with the next six unanswered runs themselves to overtake Andover/Whitesville in the driver’s seat, including a four-run second inning that propelled them ahead for their first lead.

Across the fourth and fifth innings, each team would trade deadlocks until Fillmore (5-1) took the lead back permanently with their three-run fifth inning, shifting the momentum into what would be their final term at the plate in the sixth. All in all, a 10-run bonanza paced by three big belts consisting of at least two runs or more.

Providing the game-changing bats: Damon Potter, Zach Sisson and Brent Zubikowski, who accounted for eight of the team’s 10 runs on three hits, with Potter blasting a three-run homer, Sisson scorching a three-run double to the deep outfield and a two-run double from Zubikowski to help further the team’s cause once and for all.

Zubikowski was one of four different Eagles to record at least two hits at the plate, as he was joined by Mitch Ward, Aiden Wagner and Luke Colombo. On the mound, Zubikowski was credited with the victory with a strikeout in relief. Starting, Kalen Beardsley struck out six and walked three in his three-inning tenure.

For Andover/Whitesville (1-4), Layton Miller posted a double — one of six hits the team recorded at the plate. On the mound, Jacob Wagner fanned two and walked five across his start that stretched into the third inning. The team will return to action back home in Andover on Wednesday, as they aim to rebound with a 6 p.m. visit from Friendship/Scio in store.

Tonight, the Eagles will look to remain hot to start the season, as they pay a visit to Cuba-Rushford for a 5 p.m. first pitch with the Rebels.

SCIO — Hannah Southwick-Powers and Nevaeh Ross went mono-y-mono through all seven innings of play, as the two of Allegany County’s dynamic aces combined to record 20 strikeouts at the plate from within the circle in Scio on Monday.

But when it was all said and done, Ross was at her very best game once again for the defending Class D2 champions, as the Friendship/Scio phenom halted Genesee Valley/Belfast’s offense completely, handing out a dozen chairs in the midst of another no-hit performance for the defense. The offense would feed off the energy later on in the battle, scoring all three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to edge their way towards a 3-0 edge.

“It was a cold one today, and it took a minute for Nevaeh to get really warmed up,” Friendship/Scio coach Deb Warner said. “You could tell the weather had some influence on both sides of the game. It was hard getting it out of the infield. We did string enough hits together to get some runs in, and it was nice to see the bottom of the lineup step up by hitting the ball and scoring the runs. We did strand runners in scoring position a couple times, but overall, I was really pleased with the way the girls played.”

While both aces were finding their rhythm in the circle, the fourth straight 1-2-3 inning for the Friendship/Scio (7-3) defense allowed a big burst of electricity to shift over to the plate, where they plated all three of their runs off two key hits, beginning with an RBI single off the bat of Avery Lamberson into the outfield to break the ice.

On the very next at-bat, Logan Roberts cashed in big time with her swing — a two-run single to free up all the occupied bags to branch out the lead to three, where it would ultimately stand, as Ross helped keep Genesee Valley/Belfast (3-3) off the bases with six 1-2-3 frames of defense.

As for the Friendship/Scio offense, they collected all three runs off seven total hits, all stemming from seven different batters including Ross, who posted a double.

For the visitors, Southwick-Powers handed out eight chairs and walked two during her complete game performance in the circle. Genesee Valley/Belfast will hit the road again tonight for a 5 p.m. contest at Bolivar-Richburg.

Friendship/Scio will take aim at potentially a sixth win in the last seven games when they hit the road themselves on Wednesday, heading for Whitesville for a 5 p.m. contest against host Andover/Whitesville.

FILLMORE — Down 5-2 to Andover/Whitesville and with time of the essence, the Lady Eagles of Fillmore had to act quickly in order to springboard their way back into the battle on Monday.

With the visiting opposition applying all the pressure going down the homestretch, it was up to the Fillmore offense to attempt tilting the momentum back in the other direction. Fortunately enough, they would go on to do just that and a whole lot more.

How about a five-run frame?

After Mylee Miller tossed a humongous scoreless stand in the fifth, it would allow the Lady Eagles to charge up a game-changing swing of momentum shortly thereafter, posting the game’s final seven runs in a row, including a five-run barrage that allowed them to take the lead away from Andover/Whitesville for good, pulling towards what was a 9-5 home win.

After Fillmore (3-5) was able to get the game started with a quick two-run opening frame, the burst of energy collided with Andover/Whitesville after a scoreless second inning was exchanged between the two clubs, as they rattled off five unanswered runs across the third and fourth innings to grab the early upper hand by a 5-2 count going into the fifth.

The game would soon take a big turn towards the Lady Eagles, with a Mylee Miller single into the outfield to become the team’s first leading baserunner. Following behind was Preslee Miller and her double. With both runners in scoring position, Skylar Gaddy smacked a big connection into the outfield, recording a two-run single to trim their deficit down to a single run.

With Gaddy serving as Fillmore’s game-tying run, she would ultimately score after a Mattie McCumiskey single and two consecutive walks, never looking back after gaining the lead edge. In the circle, Miller was credited with the victory, fanning three and walking one in relief. At the plate, three different Fillmore batters all recorded at least a pair of hits, including Gaddy who went 4-for-4 with two doubles. McCumiskey had three hits, including a triple, while Preslee Miller had two hits.

As for Andover/Whitesville (0-5), Olivia Waters struck out four and walked two in her complete game. On offense, Gabbi Hall and Aislinn Hamilton led the way with two hits each out of the team’s six in total. The team will head back home to Whitesville on Wednesday, as they welcome in Friendship/Scio for a 5 p.m. visit.

Up next for Fillmore is a road trip to Cuba-Rushford, as they visit the host Lady Rebels in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

RICHBURG — The Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg currently stand as Allegany County’s lone unbeaten. Docking wins in each of their first six games, the defending Class C3 champions took aim at adding more fuel to the fire on Monday.

With Campbell-Savona hot on their trail during the last stretch of the game, Malayna Ayers ensured that the host Lady Wolverines would remain buckled into the driver’s seat, continuing her hot streak with another home run of immense magnitude, helping the offense catch fire in a fourth inning jamboree that saw them extend their lead in permanent fashion, en route towards a 10-5 victory.

After a 2-0 lead in the game’s first inning allowed them to provide the right step forward, Bolivar-Richburg (6-0) began to roll. In the bottom of the third inning, Madigan Harris provided a swing of swings at the dish, destroying a pitch that would leave play and allow the Lady Wolverines senior to bank a three-run blast to extend the advantage to five.

Despite falling even further behind the hosts, Campbell-Savona did all they could to make sure they remained in reach, as they trimmed down the deficit to as little as one with a four-run top of the fourth inning to respond to Harris’ three-run smack. But the counterresponse that the Lady Wolverines would issue after-the-fact would ultimately decide the game.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Ayers launched another massive strike out of the park for a home run of her own, scoring a three-run frame to gain control of an 8-4 lead going forward, branching it out over time to help further secure their victory.

Ayers went all seven innings for the Lady Wolverines behind another stellar outing in the circle, fanning 12 Campbell-Savona batters while walking four to twirl a four-hit victory. At the plate, three different hitters recorded at least a pair of smacks, including Haley Mascho who had the biggest bat of them all by going 4-for-4, belting a trio of doubles. Ayers finished with three hits, while Allie Zilker had two more to chip in.

The Lady Wolverines are back on their home field tonight with another 5 p.m. home contest, this time against Genesee Valley/Belfast.

GAINESVILLE — It began with one massive crack of the bat. For the Lady Indians of Letchworth, Morgan Brace had it, as she laid down the lumber on a pair of home runs against visiting Cuba-Rushford, with her first coming during the team’s opening at-bats to provide a tone-setting moment in what would be a 15-0 shutout of the Lady Rebels, Monday night.

The Lady Indians went on to score a run in each of the five innings put on display against Cuba-Rushford (5-3), beginning with the first of Brace’s two home runs stemming from within their 2-0 lead after the opening frame. From that point, the hosts continued to build onto their foundation, adding five more runs across the next two innings before Brace smacked her second jack of the game in the team’s three-run fourth to further extend their advantage.

The game was put away when it ultimately reached its end in the bottom of the fifth, as Letchworth scored the last five runs to force the 15-run rule into effect, finishing off the victory.

The Lady Rebels accounted for just four hits on offense with Taylor Searle having two of them, going 2-for-2 with a double. Sydney Howard chipped in with a hit herself, along with a four-inning start inside the circle, as she fanned three and walked two.

Tonight, Cuba-Rushford is back home to face the Lady Eagles of Fillmore in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

FRANKLINVILLE — The Bobcats of Hinsdale saw Caden Miller record medalist honors at Ischua Valley Golf Club in Franklinville on a chilly Monday night on the links, but through it all, visiting Wellsville was able to come away victorious to move back up to .500 on the young season, as they saw two pairs of golfers lead the top of the scorecard in their 250-286 win.

Fletcher Kaye and Blake Kalkhof navigated their way up to the top of Wellsville’s (3-3) scorecard at the end of the match, as both golfers recorded a team-low round of 62. Following not very far behind were another pair of golfers — Jackson Shoughrue and Noah Brogan, as both tallied rounds of 63 to fuel the cause. Rounding off the scoring was a round of 75 fired by Payson Root.

Hinsdale (0-2) was led by Miller’s medaling round, as he shot the match’s lowest round of 58. Brett Bergstrom added in a 73, while Lily Howell and Brian Bergstrom rounded off the card with rounds of 76 and 79 respectively. The Bobcats are back at Ischua Valley Golf Club tonight, this time as the visiting team, as they take on host Franklinville in a 4 p.m. contest.

The Lions are back home to the Wellsville Country Club on Wednesday, hosting the Fillmore Eagles in a 4 p.m. tee time.

TRACK

Portville provides dominant sweep at B-R

BOLIVAR — Despite the chilly conditions outdoors on Monday, the competition on both the track and field flared up for the Portville Panthers, as they strolled their way past host Bolivar-Richburg in dominant fashion to take the meet’s top honor behind a sweep of the action, with the boys team scoring an 88-18 win while the Lady Panthers added a 73-36 win themselves behind multiple top finishes.

The Wolverines had four first place finishes in all between both teams, three of them coming from the field by the ladies squad, with Genecis Easton’s winning distance on the discus help leading the way. Nadia Baldwin and Carmen Crowley each came away victorious with winning distances of their own, scoring triumphs in the long and triple jumps, respectively.

As for the boys squad, just one win from the field was scored by Aidan Prentice, as he posted a winning distance in the sand bunker himself, taking gold in the long jump.

Bolivar-Richburg will join Fillmore on a trip to Wellsville for their next competitive congregation, beginning on Thursday at 5 p.m.
