Monday Roundup: C-R boys claim 4th straight win behind Childs’ hat trick at Houghton; Wellsville girls tennis remains ablaze, win 8th straight in Finals rematch vs. Alfred-Almond

HOUGHTON — Since their Brock Young Tournament championship appearance and a tough, hard-fought overtime victory over Wellsville this past weekend, the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford have begun to find their groove on the pitch.

With a new week beginning to set in Monday night, they were given an opportunity to keep the ball rolling back over the road with a visit to Houghton Academy for a battle that would unfold into an early first half battle. Both teams combined for nearly 30 shots on goal to keep the pressure on offense at an all-time high throughout the night.

Even with the heat from the Panthers continuing to rise, Robert Childs cooled it off with a big night.

The Rebels maintained a one-goal cushion across the next half hour of soccer on the pitch. But with time winding down, the time to act fast had arrived. That was when the senior helped unload a big presence in the second half, helping extend the lead over Houghton Academy before putting the bow on top at the very end with his third goal of the game — completing a hat trick to assist Cuba-Rushford’s 4-1 road victory over the Panthers to claim their fourth straight win.

“I thought this was our best performance of the season, start to finish,” Rebels coach Rob Wight said. “Every guy that stepped onto the field did their job and we executed our gameplan very well. Robert did an excellent job at being active up top and finishing his chances. Jake Elliott and Braxton Clark were all over the field for us tonight, and helped create a lot of opportunities for our forwards. I’m very proud of the effort the boys put forth tonight.”

The fight was on across the first half between Cuba-Rushford and Houghton Academy, as each squad fought their way through the midfield for the first 30 minutes of play, leading up to the first tally from the foot of Childs, who struck it home off a strong pass by Braxton Clark to give them the 1-0 lead going into the break.

After the score, the fight for possession rolled on across much of the second half until the Rebels (4-2-1) found yet another opening near the midway mark to provide more damage again from Childs, who went on to score his second of the game off a pass sent along by Tanner Lewis to branch the advantage even further.

The final three goals of the game would come in the last 10 minutes of play, with Cuba-Rushford continuing to hit all strides with a score from Braeden Wight off of a feed by Childs, who would then complete his hat trick with 1:59 left to go to cement the victory for good. In between the goals, Houghton Academy (1-5-1) would end Cuba-Rushford’s possibility of a shutout with Javier Velasco working his way into the offensive zone for an unassisted marker with six minutes to go.

In all, the Rebels went on to outshoot the Panthers by a 17-11 count, with Alex Baron recording the triumphant performance between the posts, making six saves. On the other side, Marco Zanini made eight stops for the hosts in blue, who now travel to Lima Christian on Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. contest.

Cuba-Rushford resumes play on Friday with a trip to Hinsdale, hosting Bolivar-Richburg in a big 7 p.m. Allegany County League clash.

Further bolstering the team’s lead was Ian McKenzie, who completed a four-point night himself with a pair of goals, while Callahan Tallman tallied a goal and a helper along the way. Ryan Snyder, Jordan White and Jayden Beckwith all added in an assist to finish off Genesee Valley/Belfast’s (4-2) 14-6 outshooting of the hosts in black and white, as they claimed a 4-1 lead at halftime and never looked back.

Andover/Whitesville-Jasper-Troupsburg’s (4-3) tally came from the foot of Robert Bradley, scoring off a pass provided by Ronaldo Vasquez.

Bolivar-Richburg 7, Friendship/Scio 0

BOLIVAR — A fiery conduction of soccer orchestrated by the Bolivar-Richburg Wolverines helped set up shop for their return to action on Monday, as Reiss Gaines and Brayden Zilker both paved the way towards big success against visiting Friendship/Scio at Dunsmore-Latimer Field, setting the tone on what was a 7-0 home shutout to navigate their way back into the win column.

The Wolverines (4-3) saw Landon Barkley and Reiss Gaines get the offense going with a goal each in the first 10 minutes of play, with Aydin Sisson and James Margeson each dishing along the respective assists to help set up shop. A short time later, Gaines would add his second of the game off a Barkley helper before handing out an assist himself, to Caden Giardini who found his way into the back of the net with one of his own near the midway mark.

Brayden Zilker would finish off the first half scoring at the 10:27 mark on a score that was fed along by Blake Scroggie to finish off a 5-0 lead at the break. Zilker would add one more score off from Gaines, who clinched the hat-trick in the early stages of the second half off a Gary McDowell helper to wrap up the victory. The seven Wolverines goals came on 17 total shots applied against Friendship/Scio (1-7).

In net, David Abdo saw three shots, stopping them all to record the shutout for the hosts.

Both teams are back on the field Wednesday night, as Bolivar-Richburg plays host to Wellsville beginning in a 7 p.m. first kick, while Friendship/Scio heads to Judy Bliven Field in Belmont to take on Genesee Valley/Belfast at 5 p.m.

WELLSVILLE — To say that Keshequa had one remarkable season last year on the pitch would be a massive understatement, as they authored a run that saw them take down Fillmore and Genesee Valley/Belfast in the last two rounds of Sectional play to become Class D1 champions, paving that path even further to Cortland, where they would become a State Final Four Finalist.

Those same Keshequa ladies paid a visit to the Lion’s Den on Monday to start the new week, and since leaving their mark in the New York State Tournament last Fall, they simply haven’t lost a beat, as they went on to score their sixth win in their first seven games with a 9-0 shutout of the host Lady Lions.

Wellsville 5, Alfred-Almond 0

WELLSVILLE — There has simply been no stopping the Lady Lions of Wellsville to begin the 2023 campaign.

The defending Class B2 Champions entered Monday night battling in their fourth match in the last five days, and like each time they have stepped onto the court, the Lady Lions have come away victorious in dominant fashion, as they took down Alfred-Almond in a Finals rematch from a year ago with a humongous 5-0 sweep on their home court to claim their eighth straight victory.

Although the Lady Lions (8-0) were able to take care of business, it would not come easy in both departments of play, where Sarah Mattison had to rally back at third singles against Alfred-Almond’s Jennifer Bensley after a 6-2 loss in the second set, rebounding in a big way in the last to record the 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win.

“We lost to them our first match of the year, so it was great for the team to have a tangible result of the hard work that we’ve been putting in,” Lady Eagles coach Randy Crouch said. “Spencer (Hopkins) has been awesome at third singles, and continued that trend with a big win tonight. Molly (Mahoney) played her best match of the season and really showed off her great serve and ground strokes. Claire (Schilke) really battled for the win against a good athlete with a frustrating style of play.”
