Saturday Roundup: Wellsville overcomes slow 1st half, survive 2nd half shootout with C-G to garner 52-47 win; Lady Lions dominate YWCP to build full head of steam for Tuesday’s trip to Hornell

CANISTEO — Things were a bit different between Wellsville and Canisteo-Greenwood this time around on a Saturday afternoon in the Canisteo Valley.

After a 69-38 win that went the Lions way just over a week ago, the host Redskins came right back with a big swing in the first half that gave them the lead to control going forward. But in return, Wellsville would show a tremendous amount of resiliency to shake it off with a strong second half debut to tie the game.

The third quarter gave the Lions the balance of power back again going into the last eight minutes, where they would go ahead and survive a back and forth duel with Canisteo-Greenwood, posting their largest frame of offense along the way to eclipse the 10-win mark for the season in a 52-47 edging to sweep the season series with the Redskins.

Canisteo-Greenwood started the day red hot from the field in the opening quarter, catching Wellsville (10-4) off balance with Cole Chaffee’s inside game pacing the way, along with a trio of three-pointers — two from Thomas Sirianni and one from Aiden Stewart, allowing them to capitalize on a strong 18-9 lead.

The defenses would then buckle down to close out the half, as the Lions cut away at the deficit behind solid contributions by Logan Dunbar, Cody Costello and JJ Howard, with Costello knocking down his first of three triples.

Down 24-17 heading into the second half, Wellsville would overcome a slow start to bring several pieces of the puzzle together in the third quarter, recording a 16-9 run that saw another balanced attack come into full fruition, tying the game at 33 going into the last eight minute period.,

In it, Costello and Asher Billings, along with the team’s defensive stalwart in Aidan Riley took charge of the team’s offense, with Costello and Billings each knocking down crucial three-pointers to go with Riley’s four fourth quarter points to keep the momentum swaying in their favor, ultimately holding off Canisteo-Greenwood in the long run with the victory over the road.a

Costello would lead all Lions scorers with a team-high 17 points. Dunbar was not far behind, tallying 14 points of his own, while Billings finished with eight points.

Wellsville is back on the floor over the road once more on Tuesday, as they prepare for a massive visit to The Swamp off to the west, taking on host Allegany-Limestone at 7 p.m.

Jasper-Troupsburg 64, Hinsdale 30

HINSDALE — After an early back and forth battle through the first quarter, the Jasper-Troupsburg Wildcats found a way to break things open with a strong 21-8 run, gathering a lead that they would not let up against host Hinsdale to ultimately secure a 64-30 victory on Saturday.

Stats and a complete box score were not made available to report upon publication.

The Bobcats (0-13) are back in action on their home floor Monday night, hosting Houghton Academy at 6 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Wellsville 67, Young Women’s College Prep 17

WELLSVILLE — With a grudge match against the Hornell Lady Raiders on the horizon, the Wellsville Lady Lions spent Saturday afternoon in the Den building a full head of steam to carry into the final clash with their archrival, as they used the first eight minutes to set a colossal tone against Young Women’s College Prep to establish a dominant 67-17 victory to spring back above .500 on the season.

Almost every Lady Lion (8-7) recorded at least a two-point basket to get the offense firing on all cylinders behind a 23-point first quarter while the defense fed off the momentum on the other end, holding Young Women’s College Prep to just three points along the way. It was the beginning of a strong defensive presence that Wellsville displayed all game long, as they held their opposition to no more than six points across the board to secure the victory.

Amongst the scorers, three Lady Lions eclipsed the 10-point plateau, with Lindsay Stuck leading a complete and balanced effort on the attack, scoring a game-high 13 points to pair with nine rebounds. Makenna Dunbar was not far behind, collecting 12 points of her own to pair with seven boards, while Emily Robbins had 10 points to add, coupling them with five assists and four steals. Natalie Adams garnered six steals.

Wellsville will make their trip to Hornell to visit the Lady Raiders on Tuesday, beginning at 7 p.m.
